The Jalsu Plantation Project
Lucy Larcom once quoted, “He who plants a tree, plants a hope.”
The Jalsu plantation project was an initiative by me, Ishan Sukhani, which was set up with the help of some of the local business of my city, Jaipur, to help our small neighbouring village of Jalsu receive rainfall after the scorching summer season in our desert state of Rajasthan.
The idea for the project came to me when me and my Bua (aunty) got to know from one of the brick contractors - himself a citizen of Jalsu - who worked for her company that our neighbouring village hadn't received any rainfall for the past 2 farming seasons. Now, for a village whose whole economy is agrarian, the times seemed to be quite difficult. After thinking about this newly found information, we decided that being in a position to help the needy, we should do something. This project was also at the time of my summer vacations, so I had no problem taking the initiative on her behalf to plant trees -which were known to bring rain to the region of their plantation - in this small town. During the week that followed, I decided to contact some local businesses of my hometown to talk to them for funding such a project where we could plant trees in such small villages as a part of their CSR, which would be a better and a long-term solution for the village, instead of the businesses sending water tankers over there as they usually tend to do. After talking with some of these businesses, three of them were ready to help our cause, and these were JW Marriott Jaipur, Sarovar Portico Jaipur, and Rain and Rainbow. After getting to know the source of funding and having a clear vision in my mind of what had to be done, I started planning the whole project and contacted the brick contractor again so see if he could help me in any form. After getting some information from him, we decided to set a date during August for our project and it was decided that we would bring the saplings and with the help of the villagers we would plant them on government land for which no prior permission was required. And so, we decided that on the 11th of August, 2019 we would leave for Jalsu at 7 AM to reach there by 9 AM and get started with the project. The project nearly took us 3 weeks to plan out completely including getting the funding, placing the order for the plants, and convincing the villagers to help us plant these saplings.
From here on we just buckled up and waited for the day to arrive, so we could go there and plant the trees. The morning was chilly and exciting and we just couldn't wait to get into our car and get a move on. After reaching the location we waited for the villagers to show up (which they did soon enough), and after a small briefing, we started with the actual plantation. The helpers which showed up were paired up in groups and given a number between 1 and 10 and they had to plant the saplings in every 10th hole after their initial number (so team 2 had holes 2,12,22,32, etc). The plantation took about 5 hours during which the helpers were also served food and given a small break. Apart from supervising the whole project, I also wanted to get my hands dirty and plant a few saplings myself, which came to an early end as I got a cut on my pinky finger while I was on my 6th plantation of the day.
All in all, it wasn't just an amazing experience that I received, but also the satisfaction of doing something for others and not just myself. That is something which cannot be put into words.
The plantation was a success and we planted approximately 500 saplings which are on their way to becoming huge trees soon, which would hopefully help our small friendly neighbouring village to boost its economy and provide them with all the water that they require.
In the end, I would like to end on the quote
"The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn."
